wood bark.jpg
  • A premium blend of wood bark absorbs less water to improve drainage, preventing root rot. And, its high cation exchange capacity (CEC) allows it to effectively bond to nutrients, preventing wash-out and deficiencies.

Unlike pine bark alone, our premium wood bark takes years to decay, so feel free to reuse it for years. The tannic acid and added oxygen help simulate the woody surfaces that plants climb nature, making roots go wild.

  • The density and weight of pumice helps your plant stay anchored and upright as it grows. Its porous, non-retentive properties help water exit the root zone quickly, closing the window in which root rot would occur.

Thousands of years old, pumice will not deteriorate, erode, or crumble like perlite. The uniform 1/4” particle size ensures that pockets of oxygen are consistently distributed throughout the root zone to inhibit root rot-inducing bacteria.

  • The high cation exchange capacity (CEC) in peat allows it to cling to nutrients in the soil, while its acidity facilitates the growth of beneficial microbes that help the plant absorb those nutrients. An acidic medium is critical because nutrients become unavailable to the plant at higher pH levels.

Because peat has the highest water retention rate of any plant media substrate, the wrong amount could be fatal to plants. However, after years of feedback, trials, and tweaking, The Chonk has just the perfect amount. The Chonk retains water without clogging oxygen pockets and oversaturating the root zone.

  • Zeolite is an aluminosilicate mineral with an incredible water and nutrient retaining capacity. The neutral pH allows plants to access nutrients within the middle range of the spectrum and prevents deficiencies by reducing the rate of nutrient wash-out. Clinoptilolite zeolite is one of few forms of zeolite that are viable and safe for agricultural use. It is not recommended to use zeolite that is not explicitly labeled as clinoptilolite.

  • Pumice ensures that water exits the mix quickly and retains only the amount that plants need due to its porous and non-retentive properties. The alkaline pH allows access to nutrients in the high pH range and balances the low pH of the Calcined Clay. The lack of nutrient retention helps to prevent fertilizer burn and is balanced by using a minimal amount of Zeolite, which holds an incredible amount of nutrients without shocking roots.

  • High-fired calcined clay is an acidifier that helps balance out Pumice’s high pH, allowing plants to access nutrients specifically in the lower pH range. It retains water very well internally which means it won’t clog surrounding oxygen pockets with surface water. High-firing means that calcined clay is extremely difficult to break down and will last and can be reused for a very long time.
